The Umbrella Academy came to be when the mysterious scientist, Reginald Hargreeves, searched for and adopted seven unusual children, all born on the same day. To no one’s suprise, each of the individuals exhibited extraordinary powers and abilities very early on, and Hargreeves trained them to become the superhero team known as The Umbrella Academy.

The children were 1 SpaceBoy (Luther), a mighty Hercules of a man – but with a secret; 2 Diego (the Kraken), with his singular affinity toward knife throwing; 3 Klaus (The Seance), with the ability to talk to the dead; 4 Allison (The Rumour) who can speak almost anything into being; 5 – with no other name, 5 has the ability to travel in time; 6 Ben (The Horror) who had Cthulu-like tentacles lurking in his belly, and who was killed; and 7 Vanya (The White Violin) whose power was unknown until her early adulthood, and which was so devastating that her adoptive father opted to keep her tranquilized and unaware of that power.

The Umbrella Academy is a misfit family with all sorts of family drama, who have not gathered together until they are notified of the death of Hargreeves.  They meet to mourn him, and from there, reform the Umbrella Academy.
